Can I learn another language?

I love to study languages and I’d really enjoy the chance to study a language that just isn’t spoken much in the UK. I understand that many people from South-East Asia settle in Sydney. Would there be many opportunities to study a language like Indonesian/Malay after I arrive?

Like any other major city you can interact with a lot of different cultures. You are right in that there is a big Malay and Indonesian population here, but you would have to actively seek out groups and activities within those communities using a site like Meetup.com

But yeah, there are many different cultures here and as long as you take the initiative, you could learn them here.

Can't say that it is. Due to China's gradual buying out Australian politicians and political environment + immigration laws designed for the Chinese to buy their way in, it's a good place to be exposed to Chinese culture/mandarin as well as the local "wog" (Greek/Macdeonian/Medditeranean) and lebo (lebanese) elements but specifically for Indonesia and Malay language you're better off going straight to the source. Actual SE Asia lol. SE asians are by far a minority locally and most have completely assimilated by now. I'm from Malaysia originally and I remember basically only one word in Malay lol

The cost of living is also utterly ridiculous compared to the rest of the planet and other first world countries

It's possible to find language classes in Sydney such as at the Community College and yes, going to Meetup events like this one is also a great way to practice. Indonesia or Malaysia is about 8 to 9 hour flight from Sydney.
