Do people speak good English in Porto?

Hi! I'm considering spending a few months in Portugal, probably near Porto. But I want to know if most people speak decent English, or if I need Portuguese for certain things (like getting a cab, eating out, etc)

Hi! Yes, most people in Portugal speak english (except the elders). Even if they don't, they will make an effort to understand you Have fun in Porto, you will love it.

The closer to Porto the better. The same applies to age, the people ranging from 18-35 shouldn't be a problem. You have a better chance of getting an English speaker with Uber. But most cab drivers will also understand you.

Eating out won't be a problem.

In Porto you can find easily English speaking people. Tourism increased a lot in the last 6 years or so... So business like restaurants, public transports, bars, cabs have mainly English speaking people. In general it's better in the north part of Europe but far better then in countries like Spain or Italy.

Older people (40+) normally don't speak english but they will try to help you out in some way.
But taxis, restaurant and other services that are used to handle tourists, you won't have a problem there.

yes, regular english is spoken for most of people. It is not fluent but you will have no problems in communicating.

Yes, in Portugal as a whole and in Porto and Lisbon (the 2 biggest cities) you won't have many issues speaking English. Most young people speak English and you'll find that portuguese have a knack for understanding everything - in the worst case scenario (you don't speak any ENglish, they don't speak any English) I'm sure you'll be able to come across to others.
That being said, try to understand a couple of words and sentences beforehand, so everything will be as smooth as possible.
