Does Athens feel safe at night?

As any large city I'm sure Athens has both safe and less safe areas... But are there certain neighborhoods to avoid at night or in general? And does the city as a whole feel safe to walk around at night as a woman walking alone?

Rarely happens any violent incident. The majority are thefts and steals. You should be careful when using public transport and during the night it's better to avoid crossing from some areas in the city center like Omonoia, Metaxourgeio, etc. All in all it's not that much dangerous, but you should keep your eyes open.

Generally a woman can walk alone in Athens safely. You should avoid some neighborhoods late at night. Visible police presence is particularly high in the city center and the officers are not seeking the racial profile

It is exactly as you stated it. There are safe and less safe areas in the Athens. An area best avoided by a singe woman at night would be the neighbourhood sout of Omonia Square towards Metaxourgeio. The rest of the city centre is safe, maybe not 100%, but safe enough. Having said that, it is not wise to walk in the poor areas of the centre flashing expensive jewlerry, watces, etc. or leaving handbags in cars in these areas. Still, for the most part, Athens city centre can be considered safe.

Hello Dawn.. Of course as any large city Athens has both sides. I suugest you to stay away from Omonoia, Vathi, Larisa station, Patissia. I think these is the most important areas. You can absolutely walk alone and you will be safe!

Generally, Athens is a very safe city. Many of the homeless or the drug users, may seem dangerous but the truth is that they are completely harmless. You just have to use a common sense, like every other european capital. Many Athenians avoid areas like Omonia, Vathis square, Metaxourgio, Exarchia, Agios Pantleimon, at night, but violent attacks are rare. Of course, a lot of women avoid walking alone after 23:00. The police are almost everywhere in the city centre and you can trust them.
