Definitely, it just depends on how far you're willing to drive each way for a commute. Also, I'll just assume that since you don't want to be in a big city, that you're going more for a town with a smaller population that isn't that dense, so towns that have like 25-50K population, not a lot of high-rises or traffic, and a community feel. Don't know if you have a family or not, so I'll just assume it's just you, otherwise I'd recommend some more suburbs w/ schools/families in mind.
South Pasadena: Small town east of LA of about 25K, easy access into downtown via the Gold Line (20 mins), beautiful homes and neighborhoods, quiet, safe, though expensive.
Claremont: Much further out and not an easy commute by car, but has a Metrolink with convenient access to downtown LA (60 mins train). Home to many liberal arts colleges, a chill village downtown, good food, no hustle and bustle.
Is it just you or a family? If it's a family, I can recommend some suburbs that are good for schools, crime, etc. And if you don't care about public transportation and are willing to drive 30-60 minutes, that changes things, too!
