Does Sydney have good sports facilities?

I’ve heard that Sydney has good swimming facilities that are often even open quite late, which interests me a lot, but can I expect the same for other sports? I’m a passionate rugby player and I’d love to be able to keep at it and keep fit in Sydney.

Sydney is a large place, you'd have to really look around whatever suburb or area you wish to live in. Some areas have great and accessible fields, others lack them. Sorry I could not be of greater help.

Yes Sydney is large place and it depends on where you live.

Most suburbs will have a community pool nearby but some ones of note are

1) Olympic Swim Centre - built for the olympics. Doesn't need much explanation
2) Bondi Icebergs - A hip club where people swim in chilly water all year round
3) North Sydney Olympic Pool - Right below the harbour bridge
4) Cook and Phillip Park Pool - Quite central to the city

On top of that a lot of premium gyms have pools and beaches have wave pools for swimming in the ocean.

Depends where you live, but most gyms are open quite late. There's a few pools within the CBD/Inner West/Eastern Suburbs - http://www.vppool.com.au/ is an example.

Being a Rugby player, there's a lot of team sports run throughout the week - touch footy, AFL 9s, soccer..

There are lots of sporting options around Sydney, but as Daniel said, it is a very big place so some might have a long way to travel.
As for swimming, most beaches have free pools to do laps in. I don't think they have night lights, but in summer the sun is up until late, and in winter you would need to be incredibly brave to use them as they are not heated. However there are many indoor pool facilities around as well.

Sydney is the home of the NRL. There are rugby fields all over the place and at least one form of rugby is played at most high-schools. I'm not sure of the state of women's rugby in Sydney but I can imagine it being very strong by competitive standards. Australia did just win gold in for the women's rugby sevens

Sydney does have many excellent parks and sports facilities but overall has a shortage of these per capita due to lack of planning and investment. If this is of prime importance then you need to choose an area specifically with good local ammenities.

Your best bet would be centennial parklands.
They are in charge of a few parklands in Sydney's east. They host sports competitions for all levels of skill too

Get on google maps and have a look around. Sydney is covered in rugby fields and most of them have an active Rugby League or Union club.

Not a lot of womens rugby clubs, but we do have at least 1 major comp which feeds our rather amazing womens international team.
