Valencia's the third biggest city in Spain and although you wouldn't guess it by walking around as it's got a smaller, more intimate feel, it delivers. There are neighbourhoods where you could spend months going through the cafés and restaurants, it has plenty of sporting events both as a spectator and participator, and has in the past hosted the Americas Cup as well as Grand Prix and Moto GP. You won't be short things to do or places to go.
The people are neither open- nor close-minded. You'll need Spanish if you're staying longer-term, the lifestyle is mostly live and let live, where you'll find you can do/join anything without a problem.
