How expensive is property in Vienna?

Is Vienna a city where you can easily get on the property ladder and start working your way up to a good family home or will I be trapped renting forever if I want to live in spitting distance of work?

I think if you're planning on living there for 20+y then buying pays off. In the central districts (the first 9), it's hard to find apartments under 250-300k, but I wouldn't be scared of living a bit further away from the central area. Vienna has excellent public transportation which guarantees you that you'll get from any point A to any point B within 30-40mins, which I think is quite a good deal. (Considering traffic in the central areas I wouldn't think you'd be able to save much more time.) I'd go for it, Vienna is one of the best places on earth to settle down!

Vienna is not really a property ladder kind of city. Or at least not like it is in Britain. Renting is what people usually do, often for their whole lives. People usually only buy property if they intend to stay there for the rest of their lives. That being said, depending on where you're looking to buy it can be very affordable or ridiculously high. However, you don't need to go for the super high prices since you don't have to live at the very city centre to go places. Public transport can be annoying but is generally very good.
