How expensive is renting in Tallinn?

I’ve read many good things about Estonia, how it’s a rising star of the Baltics and stuff like that, which makes it sounds like an exciting place to live. How affordable would I find renting in a nice area of Tallinn, ideally a location with lots of little shops and independent cafes?

Short answer is this: depends on your taste and standards, but if you live alone and want an apartment in a decent area and building, you would pay anywhere between 400-800 euros per month everything combined (my gut assessment). Hi Khadeejah, in the city center you should count appartment rent cost around 10 EUR per m2, average flats are 30 -45 m2 one bedroom or studio type and 2-3 bedromm between 80-120 m2, Bigger appartment rent per m2 can even be 6-8 EUR. we have several English sites like city24.ee or kv.ee you can check situation online. Utilities, like heating electricity, tv and internet will be addition to rent.

well, talking in popular areas in Tallinn you may be lucky to rent something for 250 euros + utilities (which, during winter can be pretty high because of heating). If talking about Kalamaja that kind of price means one-room apt in non-renovated house, probably heating only by furnace (which can mean you heat it up by night to +25 and by cold morning there can be just +15) or electricity (which costs lot).
"Normal" place can cost around 600-700 euros at winter (if you're lucky).
Yes, there are cheaper areas, too.

Hi,
I am renting a one-bedroom 40 m2 apartment in the cosy area situated in 10 minutes walk from the Old town, 5 minutes from the sea side and 15 minutes away from the shopping district. The usual cost of a new or freshly renovated and furnished apartment around this area is 500€-750€ per month and it depends on the level of interior and parking opportunity. Hi Khadeejah.

Flats around city centre start from around ~400 eur/month and go upwards. Price is depending on location and amount of furniture you get. Rental market is thin, so home owners are picky about pets, children, smoking inside etc.
"Kalamaja" is area where gentrification kicked in few years ago, so you might want to start to look from there and widen your circle.

Depending of your preference you could find accommodation starting from 300 EUR + usually all the taxes related to appartment - water, electricity, heating (100 - 200 EUR). The higher end of the range is up to 1000 and above.

What you are describing sounds like Kalamaja, a region in Tallinn with independent shops and small cafes, the rent for a nice 2-room apartment is about 400 euros there.

Hey there. Considering how small Tallinn is then you don't have to really worry about amount of little shops and independent cafes. There's plenty, everywhere. The rent of a regular 2 room apartment in center of the town(the most expensive part) is about 550€ + 100€ communal fees(water, electricity, garbage and repair service of the apartment's union), while you could get a 2 room apartment in almost any other part for about 450€.

For absolute minimum you could get a 1-room apartment for 300€ that wouldn't be exactly luxurious but you would be able to live in it. Luckily the little town of Tallinn is filled with public transport so moving is not a issue, most buses go every 7 minutes or so.

Depends on your income. If you want a nice, renovated flat in an attractive area, you're looking at 500-600+ euros a month, including utilities. Might be a bit less if you're in luck or willing to share a flat. As a local, I don't find renting in Tallinn very affordable.

Furthermore, not many areas with little shops, the Estonian speciality is mahoosive shopping centres scattered about the city. You'll find one in almost every bigger district. For independent cafes and lovely neighbourhoods, you'd be looking at Uus Maailm, Kalamaja, and Kadriorg mostly.

it sounds like you'd prefer the areas of Kalamaja or Kadriorg - both close to the city center, but very green and nice with parks, cafés etc.

For a nice flat of 40-50 mˇ2, I guess you are at around 450-500 EUR.

And you are right, it is an exciting place to live!

I would say about 500-800 EUR/month if you include all expenses like heating, power, water; that's for a 1-2 bedroom apartment with kitchen; you can also get away with less if you're lucky, also, rooms in shared apartments can be had for less; city24.ee can give you more information... if you want lots of cafés, it must either be Old Town, Centre, or the Kalamaja/Telliskivi district... keep in mind though, most of central Tallinn is in walking distance of 10-25min of most of the cafe/shops areas
