How necessary is Spanish in Mexico City?

As a local and regarding my experience I would say that it is very necessary to be able to speak at least basic spanish to be able to order food, or do daily transactions, ask for directions, understand signs, etc.

Every sign you see in the city is in spanish and if you're not in a tourist area it can be difficult to find someone who speaks fluent english. If you were a tourist going to the tourist destinations you'd be fine with english only but to live here I think its pretty necessary unless you're planning on staying home all day and avoiding contact with people.

Well, is highly important but not all is loose and surely you would be fine, everything depends where would you be living and which would be your activities but you will survive with basic spanish, Mexico city most urban area is a very bilingual city (english) and in the top ranked areas, like La condesa, Polanco, Lomas de Chapultepec, many people even in the most common activities & regular citizens understand mixed basic spanish, mimics and little english, also the city have a lot of foreigners and they made strong communities (little exclusive to me but... ) can start contacting some people from your country that already live here.
Problem... The more you go away to the center area or the top areas you probably would start having trouble communicating for daily basis, as not a lot of people speak other languages.
Regarding work, most jobs requiere the english language for better positions, so if you improve your spanish maybe can apply to a local job sooner.

Well is actually kind of necessary not only because in your workline it is important, but it's not that easy to find someone on the streets who can speak english, if you get lost on the city, which is really common, then oh boy, you'll be in trouble.
Of course it depends where in the city you'll be staying. But I guess if you know the basics, you'll be fine

Well for day to day you dont need to speak much English, I recommend you practice the basics like "hello", "thanks" or "please" and maybe a phrase that is useful to you, but for the work area I think you need to at least have an understanding the language, although the second language in Mexico City is English but most of the Mexicans do not speak it well, That´s why I recommend to start practicing the basics to set up without trouble.

Actually not many people speak English but this is more for the older generations (of course there are some exemptions) but Spanish is important in day-to-day life, but this is not a barrier for not coming to Mexico, as mentioned in the other comments it depends on the neighborhood you are going to settle down.

If you plan to be in a company were young people is working, definitely you won't have any problem with the language because you can easily speak English.
