How safe is Miami?

How safe do you think Miami is? Are there some areas that should be avoided at certain times or at all? What about petty crime, like pickpocketing and similar?

Depends on the neighborhood. Petty crime is everywhere. Car break ins, robberies, ect. There are definitely some really dangerous areas, but the city is gentrifying all over the place so it can be block by block at times. Some great neighborhoods are: the beach, Coconut Grove, Brickell and Coral Gables, South Miami. Places like Midtown and Wynwood are quickly changing and there are some really nice new buildings going up.

Very safe compare to latin american cities.
You just must avoid some zones like little Haiti or hialeah

Miamian here. I don't think Miami is any different from any other large city. Of course there are a few dangerous areas of town that you should avoid at all times. There are also great neighborhoods for families that have a very safe feeling. You must always use common sense when out on the street.

If you are in the heart of the party district on Miami Beach late at night then yes, there would be some risk for pickpocketing, mugging or whatever. Cars can get broken into anywhere. Like I said, it's a big city and that is not unusual, unfortunately.
