How safe is Porto Alegre?

As a solo female traveler, I'm a of course concerned with safety. If I were to stay a month or two in PA, do you have any recommendations for which areas to avoid (in terms of safety) and which areas are better? And overall, how does Porto Alegre compare with other large Brazilian cities?

I've been living in Porto Alegre for 10 years. The city is not safe. It's generally less safe than other Brazilian cities like São Paulo, Brasília and Curitiba.

You should avoid the city center at night and on weekends. Avoid neighborhoods with higher drug-related crime rate such as Rubem Berta, Lomba do Pinheiro and Restinga. Avoid being past midnight anywhere.

Stay in residential areas around the city center (Moinhos de Vento, Auxiliadora, Bela Vista).

This is BS. I live in Porto Alegre and to say that it's less safe than Rio or Sao Paulo is a blasphemy that certainly comes from someone who wants to denigrate the image of one of the coolest cities in South Brazil. Come here and see for yourself.
Stay in the neighborhoods near the airport and Arena do Gremio as they are the safest.

JOsefine, POA is less concerning that cities like Sao Paulo and Recife for Instance but you have to be careful as usual. Do not carry a lot of money and expensive phone for instance. Try to stay near the airport region as this is the safest.
