I think it depends on what you consider rude. New York tends to be a very direct, sometimes impatient city. People expect things quickly and they are clear when their expectations are not met. If someone grew up in a more harmonious or less direct environment, this can come off as abrasive. That said, most New Yorkers don't view the directness as abrasive. It's just the quickest and most efficient way to get to the desired outcome, whatever it may be.
