I mean, there's definitely some places that are dangerous but they're probably not the places you'd visit as a tourist, unless you're doing some volunteer work or journalism or something like that, but overall it is not that dangerous to walk around and take a bus or so, I've had friends from Guatemala visit and be totally amazed at how calm everything is and the safe they feel here, of course you should always be aware of your surroundings, not leave your stuff unattended and avoid certain places, but it's not like you'll get mugged just by walking around.
