What are the best areas to live in for students?

Amsterdam East!! It's the Brooklyn of Amsterdam a very up-and-coming area where all the cool bars and restaurants are opening up as rent everywhere else in Amsterdam is insane.

Rent is not cheap in Amsterdam, but good area's are east, the pijp or west. Lots of nightlife and young people.

Generally, rent can be quite expensive throughout Amsterdam. You have to pick either a great location or cheaper rent.
Amsterdam is not a huge city and with its tram, bus and metro network it's quick and easy to get around. So even if you live outside of Amsterdam city center, you can go to all the cool places quite quickly. From my experience, 20-30 minutes from where you live to a great nightclub / bar / cinema / shopping / touristic area is normal if you live in a cheaper rental area (outside of Amsterdam city center).
There is no one great area for students (that I know of), however all around the outskirts of Amsterdam you can find great deals to share apartments with other international / Dutch people / students or maybe even rent a place of your own.
I suggest doing some online research to shared housing and cheap apartments in north Amsterdam, south-east and also west (pretty much all around).
I am not a student myself, but have plenty of experience looking for affordable accommodation around Amsterdam.

Try Amsterdam Zuid-Oost. Relatively cheap and accessible through metro, train and bus

Definitely go for Bos & Lommer, Indische Buurt or other areas close to the Ring that's called A10. Close to center is being bought at rapid rates and is very touristy, middle is 50/50 and close to ring is 100% affordable + close to the cooler & more affordable things.

Amsterdam East/de Pijp/West/Rivierenbuurt are great places, but with finding an appartment there can be quite a competition.
Buitenveldert (South) is great as well if you have to be at the VU (Vrije Universiteit) and reasonably more affordable/easy to find a room than East/West/Centre and you'll be at the center quite quickly.
Zuid-Oost/Duivendrecht for cheaper living, but still reasonably close to the center.
