What's the most commonly required salary guarantee tenants ask for their apartments in Paris?

I heard that for renting an apartment in Paris you need to proof that you earn x2/x3 monthly the monthly price of the apartment you're looking for. Is that true?
If yes, is it more common an x2 or an x3 amount?

You heard right. I lived there 5 years and as far as I know, it is more x3 than x2.

But if you are short, the common practice is to ask for one of your family members, who earn x3, to garanty you. (I don't know the legal term in English, but in French we call this a "cautionnement"). It is very very common in a renting contract in Paris.

The more common is x3, you also may be asked for a "garant" someone who will pay for your rent if a problem rise.

This is absolutely true in not just Paris but the whole of France in my experience. Standard is rent being 33% of income, but it may be acceptable up to 40%. 50% is quite unlikely.

Definitely 3x for an empty apartment. You put down 1x for a furnished apartment. For an empty one, you can show French salary statements (for last three months) for you or a (parent) guarantor or you can put some (a lot of) money in an escrow account, if you cannot show the salary (for you or guarantor). Furnished is definitely simpler!

In Paris the most likely is that rent is a third of income, although a financially strong garantor in case you're unable to pay your rent will give you some flexibility.
