What's the reception to nomads of African/black decent?

I am moving to Chiang Mai in October of this year and I wondered about how the locals respond to people of color, in my case, African.

As you know, I've done the prep such as scouring several resources online. One particular post mentioned that there is on occasion some issues unique to anyone with dark skin when it comes to dealing with visa extensions and such. Is there truth to this? What tips can you offer?

Thailand is fairly accepting and "tolerant" compared to other Asian countries. Unfortunately you may get weird looks from some people but that tends to happen less in big cities. I have also heard of some teachers having a hard time applying for jobs (I.e. schools not wanting to hire them because of their skin color) but it is not the norm. Regarding visa extensions/renewals, as long as you follow the process (even if it keeps changing and doesn't always make sense) and prepare your documents carefully, show respect to the agents / officers, you should be ok. Dress respectfully whenever you have to visit an immigration office (i.e office dress code). Show that you care, and bear in mind that it is seen as a privilege to get an extension. Having a Thai friend with you when you go there is always a plus. Knowing a few words of Thai is also very helpful for it shows your interest in the culture.
That being said you may want some more feedback from a non-caucasian expat. White privilege is a thing here too

Your race will not dictate the likelihood of you getting a visa or not. It's going to be the name of the country that's written on your passport. African nationals that visit Thailand generally have a bad track record in terms of compliance to law (particularly in relation to drugs) relative to other countries. Hence if you do hold an African passport, it may be more difficult for you to land a visa. However, as Maddie Dee suggested above; showing respect, behaving respectfully and speaking a few words of Thai can go a long way in making your life in Thailand a lot easier.

I have been in Thailand for almost 3 years now. Very good point, Sang-Kyu Kim. Nationality matters, and some passports are more "useful" than others. That being said, acting respectfully and networking will probably help you get a better situation than the perpetual "tourist/visa runner" one. Look good and be polite, humble (Thai ppl do not like ppl "overacting"), NEVER yell at anyone (staying cool in every situation is highly valued here) and, most important, smile
