What's the Sao Paolo job market like?

Sao Paolo seems like a really exciting, interesting place to live, with lots of great culture to explore. Does it have a very good job market, though? Should I expect to be able to find work before arriving of will I have to arrive on hope and look once I’m already there?

It depends heavily on what you do for living. The IT job market, for instance, is quite good. The number of job opening is far bigger than the number of qualified candidates. If this is your area, I think you can start looking for jobs before arriving. Speaking portuguese is mandatory. It is very unlikely that you would find a job without knowing the basics of the language.

I'd trade Sao Paulo for Berlin any day of the week. But that's another story.

The answer to your question is: it depends. Sao Paulo has a growing startup scene, but opportunities in certain areas are hard to come by, except if you're a developer.

If you're a developer, it shouldn't be hard to find work in Sao Paulo, but it's very likely that you'll have to get here first to apply for a job. Lots of companies would be OK paying you on the side, but if everything's done by the books, you'd need to file for a work permit first. And that can be a long and bureaucratic process.

I think São Paulo is one of the best cities in South America to work, but of course depend how qualified and in what field you want to work.
I work with audiovisual and advertisement I never had a problem finding jobs,
I think if you have the money to live for a few months you'll find it easily

It depends on what you work. The fact is that we are right now in a middle of a economy hurricane. There's not lot of jobs and people are not spending money too. it's not as bad as they say on news, but it's a hard time. Anyways, is ALWAYS better to have a job before comming. About São Paulo, it is an amazing city, the biggest one and most important city in Brazil. Here you can find the world. We live in Sydney, if I would compare Sydney with São Paulo, I would say that Sydney is a small city in compare with São Paulo. Here you can find good places to going out, have fun an explore new sensations.
When we talk about jobs, I don´t think is a good idea come here now... Not only in São Paulo but in Brazil... We are in a big economic crisis. Nowadays there are 12 million unemployed here in Brazil. So, if you want an advise is... Don´t come to Brazil to try getting a job NOW because will be really hard to get it.
Don´t forget, the crise is in BRAZIL, not only in São Paulo. Think twice before you come.
So, if you even want to try to come, I desire you lucky and would be really fun meet you again.

Hello Thomas, I am Brazilian and I live in São Paulo for about 5 years. It really is a very vibrant city with diverse cultures. It is a megalopolis, with all the beauty and problems that this mean. It has an evolved startup atmosphere if compared to other hubs in Latin America, but Brazil is not in its best economic times. Much political turbulence, high inflation, high unemployment, rising levels of violence. That is, it might be a good idea to have a guaranteed job before moving. Even for that, you'll need a company to sponsor your work visa, which is expensive and bureaucratic. Anyway, Brazil does have its beauties and its people are friendly and entrepreneur. Cheers.

Depends a lot on the type of job you're looking for, your qualifications, if you speak portuguese and other things. One thing to keep in mind is that Brazil's economy isn't doing so well these last couple of years and there's currently a high unemployment rate.

Wow... That depends quite a lot, actually.
Right now, Brazil is going through some rough times, job-wise, but Sao Paulo remains a city with a bunch of opportunities (probably the best one in Brazil, in that regard).
Nonetheless, it depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a low-paying job, you might be required to speak some Portuguese, mainly for dealing with the public. But if you're looking for a high-paying job, you might find offices that only require a good English and good background.

Usually in Brazil, there is job interviews and you need to be in Brazil to get hired.
Some technology companies let you work from your home, but is not very common work only in home.

We do like people who talks more than one or two languages. If you are able to speech portuguese, english and spanish, you have very high chances to get hired.

Our office day commonly starts at 8 or 9 and ends at 18 or 19. We have 1,5 lunch time.
During your stay in office its very common you stop to take some coffee (two, three, or even four times in a day, its considered common).

We dont like to hire professionals who like to smoke.

We have some labor laws. For example, if you work 12 months in a company, you have by right to take vacation. Your vacation has 30 days.

Hi Thomas, as the others have previously said, it will all depend on your working area. It is quite hard to find a job before arriving, but it will strongly depend on the contacts you already have in here. If you speak portuguese, that would be a plus.
Also, have in mind that SP is a really exciting and interesting place, but with a high cost of living and the country is facing a really complicated political and economical moment.
