That all depends what you want. Your lifestyle, budget, and other interests would be determining factors. Chicago is very large and has a wide variety of neighborhoods. Wicker Park is a trendy and hip area. Buck town is an upcoming area of edgy folks. River North is made up of a lot of younger 20 somethings who make a lot of money and work a lot. I know a bunch of people who are living in the New East Side and rave about it. It's like a little enclave hidden from most of downtown with an amazing park in the middle. Lincoln Park is an established safe and welcoming neighborhood. Lakeview provides lots of diversity. So it all depends on what you are looking for...

@Nele I agree with @Pat2; details would be helpful. Because Chicago is so large and spread out, neighborhoods vary a lot in cost, convenience, walkability, etc. Knowing what is most important to you can help cut down your options a lot.

Given the lack of details about your preferences, Edgewater is the best neighborhood for a little bit of everything, in my opinion. Rent prices aren't as high as Lincoln Park, it's easier to get around than the further west neighborhoods because of the Red Line and express bus lines that go down Lake Shore Drive, and there is a wealth of shopping, restaurants, schools, and parks, not to mention the beach. A lot of Uptown and Lincoln Park is either luxury housing or cheap student housing, and Wicker Park and Logan Square is not for everyone. Edgewater has the most diverse neighborhood residents I've ever seen, socioeconomically, racially, and in terms of students, families, and young couples living there. Clark & Foster is my favorite intersection in the whole city!

It also depends on if you have a car or not. Youll have to have a parking spot in edgewater if you plan on using it daily. Parjing is sparse to say it nicely. If you want cheap rent and easy car use but also a somewhat close l train stop, id try west ridge or albany park. Albany would be best. Try from the francisco stop on down the brown line. Some parts of rogers park are ok. Id stick to as close to Loyola as possible.
