Which neighborhood for a student?

Hi,

As a student, I will be staying in Tartu for the summer (between June and August). I am looking for areas

• Close to the city center
• Active
• Student friendly

Hi!

I would recommend Karlova or Ülejõe, they are both close to the city center and are cheaper than other parts surrounding the city center like Supilinn

Karlova would be a better choise as it has more small local businesses and is known for it's hipster vibes

Tartu is a great city for students. Due to the fact that The area of Tartu is quite small, I'd say it doesn't matter in which neighbourhood you should live. Everything is so close and pretty walkable. But to be honest, the closer to the city center you are, the easier it would be for you, so think about these two regions: Karlova, Jaamamõisa. In the end it doesn't matter how far you are from the city center since the public transportation is also great. I wish you luck on your stay and enjoy the summer

There are various student homes in the city centre. The Raatuse dormitory is located a few hundred metres from the town hall square. There are others that are equally close to the very centre. http://www.campus.ee/en/housings/ will give you a few pointers. If you decide that a dormitory is not for you (they really are quite cosy and very well maintained), I would recommend you look for a place in the Karlova or Supilinn district. The old town would be nice, as well, if you can afford it.

Tartu is safe and there are no high criminality places that you should be afraid of. Closer to the center are the following districts: Kesklinn (the centre itself), Ülejõe, Annelinn (some parts), Karlova, Vaksali, Tähtvere, Supilinn. (Kaspar mentioned that Jaamamõisa is closer to the centre, but he made a mistake.)
